Welcome to week 19. On Saturday, Texas saw its second mass shooting in only eight days as a member of our “well-regulated militia” attacked an outlet mall in Allen. Texans can use the STATE
keyword to write to Governor Abbott and their legislators, and anyone can use the CONGRESS
keyword or send this letter asking for an Assault Weapons ban. Though, making legislators pay the price at the ballot box is likely the only way this ends.
Here are the top trending campaigns over the past seven days:
POTUS: The 14th Amendment Supercedes the Debt Ceiling
Super-organizer
created a campaign to remind President Biden that the 14th Amendment, § 4 reads, “The validity of the public debt of the United States… shall not be questioned,” and supersedes the debt ceiling law. However, Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellin believes this would create a Constitutional crisis. Either way, passing a clean debt ceiling raise would be better. Feel free to sign one or both of these petitions.DOJ: Investigate Clarence Thomas
The revelations regarding Justice Thomas have become cartoonish as the Washington Post uncovered how a judicial activist funneled money to Ginni Thomas. Ginni is not only the wife of Clarence Thomas, but she was the head of a conservative nonprofit arguing for removing limits on corporate spending in politics when Citizens United vs. FEC was decided, effectively doing this very thing. Justice Thomas didn’t recuse himself, instead casting a key vote in the 5-4 decision.
Do Not Cut SNAP or Medicaid
Congressional Republicans are itching to cut or means-test programs that help people experiencing poverty in America. According to CBPP, over 10 million people are at risk of losing food assistance, including 4 million children. It’s already hard to access food assistance in this country. The Republicans want to make it harder on the disabled and most vulnerable while doing nothing to increase employment or earnings. Speak out for them.
Others gaining steam: The Supreme Court is Broken, Chief Justice Roberts, Fix Your Court, Vote No on “Parental Rights” Legislation, Stop Attacking Trans Montanans
P.S. Resistbot needs regular donors to stay online. Please consider becoming a monthly donor, especially if you use the bot often! Resistbot is a civic utility that we work to keep free to give a voice to people in a system already rigged to favor the voices of people (really corporations, mostly) with a lot of time, money, or both, but we need folks who can chip in. Thanks! -Jason Putorti, Executive Director
