Welcome to week 22! Thanks for being a part of our Substack! If it can make it out of the GOP-dominated rules committee, a debt ceiling deal is in sight. However, FreedomWorks, Club for Growth, and the Heritage Foundation are all pressuring the GOP to, ostensibly, default, given the time remaining to pass the bill. If anyone needed a reminder of why Congress has a 16% approval rating, centrist hero Joe Manchin also put a gas pipeline approval into the deal.
Here are the top trending campaigns over the past seven days.
1️⃣ Pass the Judiciary Act Now
Speaking of the environment, the Supreme Court recently gutted parts of the Nixon-era Clean Water Act of 1972 for the second time this year in a 5-4 decision. This time Justice Alito narrowed the scope of what wetlands can be protected by the EPA, stating that the rights of property owners supersede those of everyone else to have clean water. Super-organizer
believes the solution to this and other Court rulings post-Amy Coney Barrett is to increase the number of Justices. It’s hard to argue that this Court, the least democratic of the three branches of the federal government, isn’t way past calling balls and strikes in their takedown of another fifty-year-old law. Reform must be done before they run out of rights to roll back.2️⃣ Protect Student Debt Relief
The Senate will consider later this week whether or not to roll back student debt relief and resume monthly student loan payments and interest. It’s already passed the House (Reps. Jared Golden of Maine and Marie Gluesenkamp Pérez of Washington joined with Republicans to do it). President Biden will veto this if it reaches his desk, but you can and should tell your Senators how you feel, especially if you have federal student loans.
3️⃣ Raise the Debt Ceiling
This campaign asks the House not to allow a default to happen. If you have Republican representatives, especially Biggs, Bishop, Boebert, Brecheen, Buchanan, Buck, Burchett, Cammack, Cloud, Collins, Clyde, Crane, Donalds, Fry, Gaetz, Good, Harshbarger, Higgins, Hunt, Luna, Mace, Miller, Mills, Norman, Perry, Rosendale, Roy, Self, or Waltz, sign the petition or contact them personally to explain that default has real and severe consequences for the people of the United States. As members of the House, as opposed to being right-wing influencers, they have a sworn duty to discharge the duties of their office.
Others gaining steam: Lift Suspension of Food Aid in Tigray, No Work Requirements for Medicaid, TANF, SNAP, Educators Deserve a Living Wage, Don’t Ban Books (N.J.)
